Can your Fitbit kill you?
It seems to be the question on many people mind nowadays. How safe is your Fitbit and if you don’t have one and want to buy one, should you?
Did you know that a Fitbit emit EMF Radiation?
Interesting was my answer but what exactly is EMF Radiation, and doesn’t all household items have it, like microwaves?
What to know about EMF Radiation?
- Electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as Radiation that are associated with the use of electrical power and various forms of natural and man-made lighting.
EMFs are usually grouped into two categories:
- Non-ionizing: low-level radiation which is generally perceived as harmless to humans.

5. Microwave ovens use electromagnetic radiation to heat food. The non-ionizing radiation used by a microwave does not make the food radioactive.
I guess the important question here is, in which group does the Fitbit fall?
The Fitbit is an electronic device, it will emit electric fields and magnetic fields as well as connecting to Bluetooth to all your electronic devices and that is a radio frequency.
Radiation Health Risk have this video form someone tests a Fitbit for EMF Radiation, specifically RF Radiation, with an RF Radiation meter. He is measuring the Bluetooth signal coming out of his Fitbit.
Bewildering and a little bit of scary as well.
What Does Fitbit Have to Say About Radiation from Their Devices?
Fitbit maintains that the radiation emitted form all Fitbit devices is minimal. A Fitbit’s power output is extremely low: about 0.5% – 1% of the output power of a cell phone. It is also said that if you don’t want to keep your Bluetooth active you don’t have to but then you will have to do a “force sync”.
How do you do a “Force Sync”?
- Turn on your Fitbit tracker.
- Make sure your phone’s Bluetooth is enabled.
- Open the official Fitbit app on your phone.
- Select the small Fitbit icon of your phone on the main screen of the app.
- A small menu will pop up with the last time your Fitbit was synced. There will also be an icon with two arrows forming a circle. Select the two arrows icon to perform a manual sync.
Your Fitbit will sync with the app and a progress bar appears; this will take a few seconds. Remember to sync only one item at a time. So, for example start with your smartphone and then do your tablet if you so inclined to.
What does a Fitbit do exactly?
A Fitbit is a piece of technology that people can wear around their wrist to measure their daily steps and keep track of their heart rate, sleep patterns, blood oxygen and much more.
These devices usually allow people to track their achievements during exercise and assess the data via the Fitbit smartphone app. You can use Fitbit without the subscription but there are a lot of marvelous benefits that come with the subscription.

Should you buy a Fitbit?
This is an essential question to ask yourself.
Fitbit is an investment; you buy it to achieve your health goals. Ask yourself these three important questions:
- Are you going to exercise?
- Will you wear your Fitbit?
- Do you trust Google with your health information?
We all know how crucial exercise is, but do you exercise regularly or just once or twice when the mood strikes?
A Fitbit is not a magical wand that you put on your wrist and now you keep on exercising. You will have to get in the habit of exercising.
It can motivate you as the Fitbit app has an option to add your friends and with a little bit of friendly competition you can reach your health goals faster.
Having a Fitbit is an excellent way to track your goals if you are wearing the Fitbit. It is nice to know how far you have walked and how many calories you have consumed. Finding out your sleep pattern and keep track of your heart rate are important information at your fingertips.
These tracking includes data about your day. Fitbit has access to your phone’s GPS so Google will be aware of your location and your health information.
Is a Fitbit worth it?
I would say yes, keeping in consideration what we have learned here. Our homes are ridiculed with electronic devices and EMF Radiation. The Fitbit is safe to you in that aspect and if you are worried about the RF frequency then switch off the Bluetooth and do a “Force Sync”. Don’t ware the item 24/7 but use it when hiking or exercising.
My conclusion is that the Fitbit is not just a device to track your steps but is also a watch and a fashion statement. The Fitbit is as safe as non-ionizing items can be and should not kill you!
