Fantasy Hiking – 5 Alternative Android Apps

There are apps out there for example you go on a hike and the hike is a map or the road to Middle Earth or to Mordor from the Lord of the Rings. These are called fantasy hiking apps.

Did you know there are apps for people that can make hiking more of a fun activity?

Being me I had to go check this app out I mean I love hiking and unfortunately or maybe, fortunately, I tend to be a little bit of a nerd who doesn’t like Lord of the Rings right? Or any fantasy for that matter I mean imagine yourself you go on a Lost Kingdom hike or on Winter King or even for those of you that liked Game of Thrones, imagine a Game of Thrones hike.

Because there is the Game of Thrones hike that you can do if you go to that part of Croatia where most of Game of Thrones episodes were made. Maybe not a specific hike but more a sightseeing adventure. Imagine being in Dubrovnik on the Baroque Staircase and walking the Famous “Shaming” scene. I wonder what the fantasy hike would show?

I started my search for the fantasy hike app and found a lot of iPhone apps. The one that stood out was Fantasy Hike by Jens Andersson but unfortunately not available on Android.

Fantasy Hike

Fantasy Hike or “Walking Motivation” as it is called, is a great way to get moving. You start with a quest and the more you walk, the more you (avatar) will progress through a beautiful fantasy adventure. You can track your progress, receive achievements, and see notifications as the quest advances. You can also sync Apple Watch data and integrate with Apple Health and it’s free on the apple store.

This health app gets an almost five-star rating. It looks super awesome.

However, I have an Android phone and want something like the fantasy app available on Android.

Take a Walk on the Fantasy Hiking Side

I started my search with Google Play Store and searched for fantasy Hikes and found everything about fantasy and something about hiking but yet not the fantasy hike that was available for iPhone.

This was a big disappointment but I am not somebody that just gives up so I looked on my friend Google. Lots of hiking apps but nothing like the fantasy hike from Jens Andersson.

There are even people that did alternative fantasy hikes and then they used all trails and wiki hikes but those are hiking apps that you use when you go on a hike these apps measure your steps and can even measure your heart rate! Evidently, they provide a clear explanation and advice on the route that you are on but they are not the same for me as the fantasy hike.

What do I want the Fantasy Hiking app to have?

  •  I want to go on a hike and when I look at the map I want to experience the “fantasy vibe”.
  • A quest.
  • My steps and activities must be tracked.
  • Rewarded for completing my quest.
  • The app must be free but in-app purchases are fine.
  • Sharing with friends would be awesome.

This turned out to be more difficult than I had anticipated, nevertheless, I have started this quest, and onwards I go.

I found “Walk to Mordor” but unfortunately, it was taken down from the Play Store so back to square one.

Conqueror Challenge

On my search I came across the Conqueror challenge app this is a virtual exercising app where you have challenges that you do that accumulate to rewards. The app looks very interesting and even the graphics on the photos and screenshots look amazing but to join the challenge you have to buy the challenge. It makes sense that virtual fantasy hike may indeed not be free but I am still searching for a great app that has first of all the fantasy vibe and secondly it’s free.

Zombies Run 10

Onwards on my quest I went and found the Zombies Run 10 app and oh my word it is a game and audio adventure!

You are running and hearing the zombie sounds coming through. Every run becomes a mission where you’re the hero and the zombies are trying to catch you. That sounds so scary, I don’t like running to tell you the truth I prefer hiking but if I hear that sound I will definitely be running. Of course, I downloaded it at once, and what a big file! Nevertheless this app I was going to try.

That was not really what I had imagined it would be despite this I did find it interesting and definitely gonna give it a few more trials to see if it’s something that I would enjoy doing.

Key features for Zombie Run 10:

● View detailed graphs and stats for your entire running and game progress.

● Choose your own custom playlists before you start running.

● Check your run progress and speed at a glance with our Wear OS app.

● Share your runs online, complete with maps and full run history

How was my Gaming experience?

I enjoyed the game, it felt realistic and made it interesting to participate.

They loaded extra gaming experiences like a Dragon Adventure and I enjoyed taking part in the adventure and so I am still using this app.

My quest is starting to get interesting and I am on to the next hiking app adventure.

Fitness RPG

I found Fitness RPG walking games.

Train your team of heroes as you exercise, the more activities you do the stronger and better your heroes become.

Your quest is to defeat your enemies and save all from the Dark Force that took over Fitland 12 years ago. Villagers await the savior to return.

Key features for Fitness RPG

●  Fitness RPG – convert your steps into free energy and use them to level up heroes

● Sync steps – Connect and sync steps from the phone, Fitbit, and Google Fit

● Battlegrounds – Explore the Fitland map, fight monsters and save the realm

● Team of heroes – Collect and train different heroes, and form the ace team

●  Precious equipment and skins – Collect, and upgrade precious weapons to make your team stronger

● Arena – Compete with other players and fight your way to the top

The graphics look fine, this is free but has in-app purchases.

It was not really what I had in mind but it has a fantasy vibe so I am going to try it out.

How was my Gaming experience?

Interesting, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I will play Fitness RPG for a little longer while exercising to see if this is a fit for me.

Forwards onwards to my next search for a fantasy hike.

The Walk Fitness

The Walk Fitness tracker game is the next fantasy hike app on my list.

I got the feeling that this app is almost like the Zombie Run app.

Walking in the real world will make you move in the game. A bomb explodes in Inverness station, and you’re given a package that could save the world. To stay alive, you’ll need to walk the length of the UK. The Walk is more than just a great pedometer/step counter — it’s a way to turn walking into a journey, a challenge, and a rip-roaring adventure.

Key features for The Walk

● Activity tracker

● Captivating story

● Motivation

● Adaptive as The Walk adjusts its difficulty based on individual fitness levels.

I sense an almost paranoia when using this app. So I downloaded it and started on my quest.

How was my Gaming experience?

It was fun but not really what I was looking for despite that I am going to give it a few more tries.

Therefore on with my quest and  I found another walking game.

My first impression of this app, it looks like a “pokemon” thing. Again not really my taste but has a few good reviews.

Wokamons are running out of resources and they need your help! Every step you take is turned into energy. Use it to feed, grow and collect Wokamons. The more you walk, the more Wokamons you can collect and the further you get to explore the magical Woka-worlds like candy desert, icy realm, mystical forest, and more! Lend a helping hand and soon you will find, that the more you help, the fitter you get!

Key features for Wokamon

● Pedometer

● Check your daily and weekly progress

● You can compete with your friends in the game.

How was my Gaming experience?

The graphics look good, and it could be fun but not what I had in mind.

So going on to my next hunting quest for a fantasy hike app.

Walk Master

Walk Master, is next on my list.

Test your skills in the most fun and challenging arcade walking action simulator of them all – for FREE!

Take a walk on the wild side! Trot through the forest and farms with skill, precision, and timing to become the Walk Master! Unlock unique challenge levels and crazy creatures! This sounds interesting.

Key features for Walk Master

● Master the challenging levels

●  More new levels regularly

●  Collect 31 unique characters

●  Precision controls – easy to learn, hard to master!

It doesn’t have the features I wanted. There is no pedometer or activity tracker.

However, I downloaded the app and gave it a try.

How was my Gaming experience?

The game is fun but this is a normal game and NOT a fantasy hiking game. Definitely not what I was looking for.

I am running out of apps to test, is it possible that there are no apps out there on Android than what is available on iPhone?

At least I have found 5 fantasy hiking apps with my specific criteria.

Let’s recap the fantasy hiking apps found for Android:

  1. Conqueror challenge
  2. Zombies Run 10
  3. Fitness RPG
  4. The Walk
  5. Wokamon

These apps can assist you to get fit while having much more fun. They combine hiking with gaming an exciting way to motivate you to go on that walk or hike.

Although these apps do not have the same fantasy “vibe” that Fantasy Hike has by Jens Andersson.

My Favorite Free Fantasy Hiking App

Zombie Run 10, which I have tried on my walker at home. It was an interesting experience and I am still using it. A great way to get fit, if you are interested to get in shape for hiking then my 3 easy steps will help you out.

I don’t think that I will use this app outdoor though.

I like to get “lost” in my head and enjoy nature. I try not to think about other stuff, and keep my mind just on the hiking.

Finis Mitchell said it best: ‘We don’t stop hiking because we grow old – we grow old because we stop hiking

Would you participate in a fantasy hike?

Do you know of an alternative hiking app for Android on the same “vibe” as Fantasy Hike?
